Compton Fibre Newsletter No.5

Dear neighbour,

Have you recently received an email like the one shown below?

Subject: You could be eligible to get gigabit-capable broadband

Several of you have asked me if it's real or relevant.

The email starts like this:

HampshireBetterBroadband
You could apply for £3,000 of Government funding today

Is it a scam?

No, it's promoting a new Hampshire County Council scheme to help fund fibre broadband in rural communities.

How does it work?

For some time, central government (DCMS: the Department of Culture Media and Sport) have been offering vouchers worth £1500 per domestic property and £3500 per small business towards the cost.
Some counties (now including Hampshire) offer top-up vouchers. HCC will chip in an extra £1500 per domestic property, meaning a residential property can get £3000 of grant funding.

Does it apply to us?

It could, but we don't need it.

Why don't we need it?

Because the 117 properties in our Compton fibre project are in quite a compact area. So our contribution towards project costs was about £45,000, much less than other communities (for example Hursley) were asked to raise.

We managed to cover our target with a mixture of DCMS domestic and small business vouchers, without needing additional funding.

Is there any news about the Compton Fibre Project dates?

Nothing new recently, other than they're still on schedule. But if I get any useful information from Openreach I'll send another newsletter round.

About this newsletter: We set up this newsletter so that we can send you occasional updates about the project. You can always keep an eye on the project website at cfp.comptonshawford.uk.
